Senior portrait and graduation photographer in Summerville, SC
Two very different people arrive at this page. One is a high school junior or senior who needs senior portraits made. The other is a household whose graduate finishes a degree this year and wants the regalia photographed properly, once, by somebody who does it often. It is the same craft, and both are on the same calendar here.
We work from a room on Crosscut Lane in Summerville, inside the district a lot of local seniors graduate from and a short run down I-26 from the campuses in the city. We photograph seniors coming out of the Dorchester and Berkeley county high schools, plus graduates of Trident Technical College, Charleston Southern University, the Medical University of South Carolina, The Citadel and the College of Charleston, and plenty who studied far outside this state and simply came home for the ceremony.
A graduation portrait is not a headshot and not a family photograph, although it borrows from both. It has to be formal enough for an announcement and honest enough that the graduate still recognizes themselves in it ten years from now.
When to schedule senior photos before a May graduation in Charleston, SC
The two halves of this work sit in different parts of the year, and confusing them is the scheduling mistake families make most.
Around here the ceremonies themselves pile into May and June, with a second, smaller wave of college commencements in December. Late spring Saturdays go to whoever claims them first, because every school in the Charleston area is graduating inside the same few weeks. Once the ceremony date is published, treat it as fixed and build the sitting around it rather than trying to fit one in afterward.
Senior portraits run early.
Most are made in the months after junior year ends and through the following fall, long before anyone puts on a gown. Yearbook staff and announcement printers each set their own cutoff and no two schools pick the same one, so ask yours for the date and count backward from it.
Regalia arrives late.
A cap and gown usually reaches the graduate only a few weeks out, which is why those frames cluster tight against the ceremony.

Three settings work, and the choice comes down to what the graduate wants behind them.
Bring all of the regalia: gown, cap, tassel, stole, cords and the diploma cover. Hang the gown the day before so the folds drop out, because a creased gown photographs exactly as creased as it is. Add a second outfit the graduate actually wears, and one object that carries the story, an instrument, a jersey, a letter of acceptance to whatever comes next.

Campus.
The building where the degree was earned, the quad, the field, the lettering at the entrance. Plenty of campuses require permission or close their landmarks to photography during commencement week, so this gets checked while the date is being set, not on the morning of.
Somewhere that means something.

Plan on the family being in front of the camera as well. Parents, brothers and sisters, grandparents and whoever flew in are already gathered and already dressed, so a group set costs a few extra minutes and often turns out to be the only proper portrait of everybody together in years. Wear solid colors and pick a palette that does not fight the gown, since the regalia is going to be the loudest thing in the frame no matter what.
