Studio FB USA is a photography and video studio at 115 Crosscut Lane in Summerville, South Carolina, and quinceañeras are on the calendar all year. A quince has two halves and we cover both: the portrait sitting in the gown, made weeks before the celebration, and the celebration itself, from the mass through the last song of the night. Most families here go looking for a quinceañera photographer twice: once for the portraits in the gown, once for the celebration, and usually they end up hiring two different people. Keeping both in one studio is simpler to arrange and it shows in the pictures. The portrait sitting is where we learn how she wants to be photographed, before there are a hundred and fifty guests in the room, and the party is then covered by someone she has already worked with rather than by a stranger with a camera.

In the studio the light is designed instead of found, a full gown reads clean against a background chosen for it, and weather stops being part of the plan. Plenty of families do both, beginning inside and finishing outdoors, and some bring a second look for a lighter set.

One piece of timing matters more than the rest. Hold the sitting early enough that the prints, the display and any montage for the party can actually be made from it.

Half of a quinceañera is movement. The entrance, the waltz and the routine the court rehearsed for weeks are built to be watched, and a photograph can hold one instant of a dance but never the dance. That is the argument for filming the celebration as well as photographing it, and both come from the same studio, so the two cameras plan the night together instead of fighting for the same corner of the floor.

Reception halls are dark, and the moments that matter most tend to land in the dimmest stretch of the night. Lighting for that is agreed in advance with the venue and with whoever is running the music, not improvised between songs.
