The best fall family photo outfits in the Lowcountry look like autumn and feel like summer: muted earth tones in light, breathable fabrics for September and early October, one light layer for late October and November, and real knits only once December arrives. Dress for the temperature you will actually get, not for the cold-weather fall on Pinterest.
The numbers explain why. According to the 1991–2020 climate normals for Charleston International Airport published by NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information, the average high is 85.4°F in September and still 77.9°F in October. A chunky sweater in that weather turns into red cheeks and an unhappy toddler by the second setup.
What fall actually feels like here, month by month
Use this table to choose weight and layers. The temperatures are NOAA’s monthly averages; the outfit columns are our recommendations for an outdoor session.
| Month | Average high / low (°F) | Average rain (in.) | Fabric weight | Layers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| September | 85.4 / 68.3 | 6.0 | Lightweight cotton, linen blends, light denim | None. Short sleeves or rolled sleeves for kids |
| October | 77.9 / 57.7 | 4.3 | Cotton, chambray, thin knits | One open layer you can take off: a cardigan, an overshirt |
| November | 69.4 / 47.1 | 2.7 | Knits, corduroy, heavier denim | A sweater or jacket for the adults; easy layers for kids |
| December | 62.7 / 41.6 | 3.4 | Wool blends, cable knits, velvet | Coats can stay on for a few frames |
Two practical notes come out of the table. Late-afternoon sessions are cooler than the daily high, so an October session at sunset can handle a light layer. And September is still one of the wettest months of the year, so keep a backup date in mind for anything planned outdoors.
Fabrics compared: what breathes and what reads as autumn
Color says “fall” first, but texture does the rest. The comparison below helps you get the autumn look from fabrics that will not cook anyone in a warm month.
| Fabric | How it feels in a warm fall | How it looks on camera | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linen and linen blends | Coolest option | Soft and relaxed; wrinkles show | September, adults |
| Cotton and chambray | Comfortable in most of the season | Clean, matte, easy to coordinate | Everyone, any month |
| Thin knits | Fine from mid-October | Adds texture without bulk | Parents, older kids |
| Denim | Warm in September, ideal later | Ties a group together in blue | Kids and dads, one shade for all |
| Corduroy | Warm; best in November | Rich texture that reads as autumn | Toddlers, trousers and skirts |
| Chunky knits, wool, velvet | Too warm before December | The classic cold-weather fall look | December, or a short studio set |
Pick three autumn colors, then spread them around
Coordinate, do not match. Choose two or three colors that sit together, then dress each person in a different mix of them. In fall, that usually means a base of cream, taupe or camel, one deeper tone such as brown, rust or olive, and blue only where it shows up naturally, in denim.

Look at the photo above. Nobody is wearing the same top, yet the group reads as one family because every piece comes from the same short list of tones. That is the whole method.
A few things work against it: large logos, busy prints on more than one person, and neon. If one person wears a pattern, keep it small and pull its colors into everyone else’s outfit.
Dressing each person, from the baby to the grandparents
The people at both ends of the age range decide how the session goes, so dress them for comfort first, then build the parents around them.
- Parents: one of you can carry the deepest color of the palette, for example a rust or olive dress or knit top, while the other stays in a lighter base such as cream, camel or chambray, with denim or chinos. Midi and maxi lengths move well when you walk or sit on the ground.
- Babies and toddlers: soft fabrics, nothing scratchy at the neck, and a spare outfit in the bag. A child who hates the sweater will show it in every frame.
- School-age kids: let them pick between two outfits you have already approved. They cooperate better in clothes they chose.
- Grandparents: comfortable shoes and a layer they can remove. Ask what they plan to wear early, so their colors join the palette instead of fighting it.
Try everything on together a week before, and photograph the whole family standing side by side on your phone. Problems that hide in a closet show up instantly in a group picture.
Under the oaks and on the sand: outdoor sessions in fall

Outdoors, the setting adds its own color. Live oaks and Spanish moss are gray-green, marsh grass turns gold, and beach sand is pale. Light outfits in cream, white and soft florals glow against that backdrop, which is why they still work in an early-fall session even though they are not “autumn colors.”
For later in the season, deeper tones stand out better against green and gold. Whatever the month, shoes matter more outdoors than people expect: sandals and bare feet on sand, flat shoes on grass and paths.
Light is the other factor. In warm months, the last hour before sunset is both the most flattering and the most comfortable time to be outside, so plan outfits for that light, which is warm and low.
Fall clothes in front of a studio backdrop
In the studio the weather stops mattering, so heavier fall fabrics become an option even in September: a knit or a corduroy set for a short series of frames is easy indoors. The other advantage is control over the background color.
Pair the palette with the backdrop. Warm browns and taupes against a peach or terracotta background, as in Samara’s session above, give a soft, unified look. Against a light gray background, the same clothes look crisper and the faces stand out more.
Choosing the right photographer for the style you want is its own decision; our guide on how to choose a family photographer covers what to check before you book.
Your fall outfit plan in five steps
- Check the month in the first table and pick the fabric weight.
- Choose three colors: a light base, a deeper fall tone, and denim if you like.
- Dress each person in a different mix, with at most one small pattern.
- Do a try-on a week ahead and take a phone photo of everyone together.
- Pack a spare outfit for the youngest and a removable layer for the adults.
