The Best Time of Year for Family Photos in Charleston, Month by Month

In much of the country, family photo season means a few crisp weeks of fall foliage. Charleston runs on a different calendar: the cool, comfortable weeks arrive later, spring is nearly as good as fall, and the month most families want is also the month that fills up first.

The best time of year for family photos in Charleston is mid-October through November, with March and April a close second. Both windows bring average highs in the 70s or below, less rain than summer, and a sunset early enough for small children.

Fall is the busiest season because of holiday cards, so book it early; winter is the quiet, flexible option; summer works at the edges of the day or in the studio.

Charleston’s photo year in numbers

The table puts the three things that decide an outdoor family session side by side: how warm it is, how wet it is, and when the light goes. Temperatures and rain are NOAA’s 1991–2020 climate normals for Charleston International Airport; sunset times are for the 15th of each month from the U.S. Naval Observatory.

Month Average high / low (°F) Average rain (in.) Sunset (15th) For a family session
January 60 / 39 3.4 5:36 p.m. Cool, quiet, early light; easy with small children
February 64 / 42 3.1 6:05 p.m. Still quiet; layers look natural
March 70 / 47 3.4 7:28 p.m. Spring starts; clocks change, so evening light moves later
April 77 / 55 3.3 7:50 p.m. Azaleas and mild evenings
May 84 / 63 3.3 8:12 p.m. Warm; evening sessions start late for toddlers
June 89 / 70 6.2 8:29 p.m. Hot and wet; sunrise, late evening or studio
July 91 / 74 6.6 8:29 p.m. The hottest month; studio season
August 90 / 73 7.0 8:05 p.m. The wettest month; keep a backup date
September 85 / 68 6.0 7:26 p.m. Still summer outside; demand starts to climb
October 78 / 58 4.3 6:47 p.m. The weather turns; fall dates still open early in the month
November 69 / 47 2.7 5:18 p.m. The driest month and the busiest one for family photos
December 63 / 42 3.4 5:15 p.m. Holiday sessions, short days

Fall: the favorite, and the busiest

From mid-October through November, Charleston gives you comfortable temperatures, a sunset around dinnertime and, in November, the driest month of the year. It is also when demand peaks. On our own calendar, requests for family sessions build from September and peak in November and December, driven by holiday cards, and November weekends go first.

Two cautions. September still feels like summer, with an average high of 85°F and about six inches of rain.

And the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, according to the National Hurricane Center, so any outdoor date in September or October deserves a backup. If you are dressing for a fall session that still feels warm, our fall family photo outfits guide covers fabrics month by month.

Winter: short days and open calendars

January and February are quiet on the calendar, so the Saturday you want is usually open. Highs around 60°F mean coats, knits and scarves look natural instead of staged. Because the sun sets around 5:30 to 6 p.m., an outdoor session ends before dinner, which suits families with small children.

December sits between the two seasons. Many families want their photos done before the cards are ordered, but December sessions work for something else: the season itself.

In Summerville, the town lights the Christmas tree in Hutchinson Square in early December (the Old Time Christmas Celebration & Tree Lighting was on December 2 in 2025, according to the Town of Summerville calendar). Decorated downtown streets and your own tree at home are both December backdrops.

Spring: azaleas and mild evenings

March and April are the other sweet spot. April averages 77°F, rain is still moderate, and Summerville earns its “Flowertown” nickname: the azaleas peak, and the YMCA’s Flowertown Festival fills Azalea Park around them each spring (April 4–6 in 2025, according to the Town of Summerville calendar).

Spring is also less crowded on our calendar than fall, and outdoor sessions are comfortable before the heat sets in. Two things to plan for: the clocks change in March, so evening light moves an hour later, and blooms do not follow the calendar exactly, so a flower-themed session needs a flexible week.

Summer: sunrise, late evening or the studio

June through August are the hottest and wettest months: average highs of 89 to 91°F and more than six inches of rain a month, much of it in afternoon storms that can erase an outdoor plan in minutes. The sun sets around 8:30 p.m. in June and July, which is late for a toddler.

Families who want summer photos have three good options: an early-morning session, a late-evening one for older children, or the studio, where nothing depends on the sky. In the studio, a July afternoon is just another afternoon.

Pick the hour as carefully as the month

On location, the time of day matters as much as the date. The last hour before sunset is the softest light of the day, and the table above tells you when that hour falls in your month. In November it starts a little after 4 p.m.; in June it does not start until about 7:30 p.m.

With babies and toddlers, sleep and meals come first, and sometimes that means trading the perfect light for a happier child. We cover that trade in planning family photos around a toddler’s naps.

When your child’s age matters more than the season

Season is a preference; age is a deadline. A baby who has just learned to sit up, a child losing front teeth, a teenager in a last year at home: none of them waits for a good season.

When one of them is the reason for the session, book for the child and choose the month around them. A studio session works in any of the twelve months above.
